Could meditation improve your running?

Ask yourself this question;

Have you ever been on a run and thought that you’re going to have to stop because your body can't take it anymore?

If so, read on...

First things first... What is meditation? 

Meditation can be defined as a "practice in which an individual focuses their mind on an particular object, thought or activity to achieve a mentally clear and emotionally calm state" Meditation has been used to help people improve their lives for thousands and thousands of years! 

Many of you reading this will associate Meditation with somebody sitting in a room with their legs crossed and their hands in the air with there eyes closed thinking to themselves... Actually this is incorrect, Meditation can occur anywhere whatsoever and is becoming more and more popular during the interaction of activities, especially Running! 

Meditation has many benefits including; 

 Increaseing -  Decreasing - 
Positive emotions Anxiety
Compassion  Stress
Control over emotions Pain
Ability to focus Depression 

 

After researching and trying Meditation first hand - Something became very obvious to me. We as humans and addicted to THINKING. We literally can't stop thinking... - Try now for 10 seconds to clear your head of everything that is currently happening in your life and I can guarantee 99% of you won't be able to do it!

Crazy isn't it! 

Obviously we have to think and thinking is one of our biggest assets in life because without it we wouldn't be able to do anything. However, thinking can be unhelpful at times because a lot of our thoughts are actually quite negative. :( 

A great example of how our thought make us feel would be Road rage! A very common occurrence on our British roads unfortunately! If somebody was to cut you up whilst you was driving - straight away you begin to shout at your steering wheel - this then causes you to feel angry and ultimately brings down your mood. 

Well imagine if you could PAUSE and take a deep breath before you started shouting at your steering wheel... This is where the power of Meditation comes in to it. 

Meditating decrease the amount of thoughts/the speed at which thoughts enter our minds. Meditating allows you to become more in control of your emotions. Similar to a switch in your house actually, in the sense that before you decide to feel a certain way or think a certain thought, you can turn your mind off! 

So next time you are out on a Run, try and control your breathing, in through your nose out through your mouth and focus on that cycle. Or try and focus on only thinking of one colour in your head whilst you Run or internally thinking of one positive thought. By doing this you are starting to spend less time in your head and more time outside your head! 

Now, do you remember the question that I started this blog off with? "Have you ever been on a Run and then thought that you are going to have to stop because your body can't take it anymore?"

Try and use one of the tips above to control your thoughts and let's see together if they too can help you improve as a Runner, like the ways Meditation has already improved many people's Running abilities! 

The famous saying "It's all in the head" is very true! Clear your head of negative thoughts and watch yourself improve on your Runs!!
